2026 Canadian Hillman Prizes for Journalism

Annual prizes honour excellence in journalism in service of the common good

Toronto, Ont. (Nov. 12, 2025) – The Sidney Hillman Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Canadian Hillman Prizes, honouring excellence in investigative journalism in service of the common good.

The Hillman Prizes celebrate print, digital and broadcast reporting in the public interest that exposes injustice and leads to meaningful policy change. 

The judges will consider entries in the following three categories: print/digital, broadcast (TV, radio, podcast), and local/community news (any medium or format).

The Canadian Hillman Prize winners will be awarded a $2,500 honorarium and a certificate at our celebration in Toronto, to be held on April 9, as well as travel to New York City to be a guest at the U.S Hillman Prize ceremony on May 5.

Previous Canadian Hillman Prize winners include The Globe and Mail, CTV W5, The Narwhal, the Toronto Star, The Hamilton Spectator, The Montreal Gazette, The Walrus, the Calgary Herald, the Edmonton Journal, CBC/Radio-Canada, and TVO. 

“As Canadians face unprecedented challenges, both within and from beyond, courageous journalism has never mattered more,” says Canadian board member Alex Dagg. “The Hillman Prizes celebrate those who dig for the truth and tell stories that hold the powerful to account, strengthen democracy and improve people’s lives.”

Since 1950, in the United States, and 2011 in Canada, the Sidney Hillman Foundation has honoured journalists, writers and public figures who pursue social justice and public policy for the common good. Over the course of nearly eight decades, the prizes have charted some of the best and most significant stories and writers of our time. They reflect the evolution of journalism, and the ongoing struggle for truth and justice.

Sidney Hillman was the founding president of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union of America, a predecessor union of Workers United, SEIU, and a founder of the CIO. An architect of the New Deal, Hillman fought to build a vibrant union movement, extending beyond the shop floor to all aspects of working people’s lives. 

Eligibility

Entries must have been published or broadcast in 2025 and made widely available to a Canadian audience. Nominated material, and a cover letter explaining how the entry meets the requirements can be submitted here. There is no fee to enter.

Les prix annuels récompensent l’excellence en journalisme au service de  l’intérêt commun

Toronto, Ont. (le 12 novembre 2025) – La Sidney Hillman Foundation accepte maintenant les candidatures pour les prix canadiens Hillman 2026 qui récompensent l’excellence en matière de presse d’investigation au service de l’intérêt commun.

Les prix Hillman récompensent les articles de presse écrite, numérique et audiovisuelle d’intérêt public qui dénoncent les injustices et mènent ainsi à des changements politiques concrets. 

Les juges examineront les candidatures dans les trois catégories suivantes : la presse écrite ou numérique, la diffusion (télévision, radio, baladodiffusion) et les actualités locales et communautaires (tous supports et formats).

Les lauréats canadiens des prix Hillman recevront 2 500 $ et un certificat lors de notre célébration à Toronto le 9 avril. Ils auront aussi la chance de participer à un voyage à New York dans le cadre de la cérémonie de remise des prix américains Hillman le 5 mai.

« Alors que les Canadiens doivent surmonter des défis sans précédent, tant à l’intérieur qu’à l’extérieur du pays, un journalisme courageux est d’une importance capitale », a déclaré Alex Dagg, membre canadien du conseil d’administration. « Les prix Hillman rendent hommage à ceux et celles qui recherchent la vérité et racontent des histoires qui obligent les puissants à rendre des comptes, renforcent la démocratie et améliorent la vie des gens. »

Depuis 1950 aux États-Unis et 2011 au Canada, la Sidney Hillman Foundation a rendu hommage aux journalistes, aux écrivains et aux personnalités publiques qui œuvrent en faveur de la justice sociale et des politiques publiques pour l’intérêt commun. Depuis près de huit décennies, ces prix récompensent certaines des meilleures et des plus importantes histoires et les écrivains les plus doués de notre époque. Ils reflètent l’évolution du journalisme et la lutte permanente pour la vérité et la justice.

Sidney Hillman était le président fondateur de l’Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union of America, un syndicat prédécesseur de Workers United, SEIU, et l’un des fondateurs du CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations ou le Congrès des organisations industrielles). Architecte du New Deal, Sidney Hillman s’est battu pour créer un mouvement syndical dynamique, s’étendant au-delà des lieux de travail pour améliorer tous les aspects de la vie des travailleurs. 

Admissibilité 

Les candidats doivent avoir publié ou diffusé un reportage en 2025 et leur travail doit être largement accessible à un public canadien. Les candidats peuvent soumettre le matériel nominé et une lettre de présentation expliquant en quoi leur candidature satisfait aux exigences ici. Il n’y a aucun frais de soumission.

9 avril 2026 : cérémonie de remise des prix canadiens Hillman à Toronto
